Overview
Set in the southwestern mountain foothills between the Lohadhri Empire and the western coast, Bacchusgrove is a fey forest where the trees glow, the flowers change colour with music, and the boundaries of the republic literally shift depending on the Revelmasters' whims. No war has ever come to Bacchusgrove. Outsiders who enter uninvited become lost, then confused, then euphoric, then unconscious. They wake three miles outside the forest with no memory of how they got there. Those who enter with genuinely hostile intent do not wake up at all.
Behind the reputation for hedonism lies a sophisticated civilisation built on the philosophy that if magical decline is inevitable, then complete sensory appreciation of what remains is the only meaningful response. Satyr artistic traditions (performance recordings captured through specialised crystalline resonators, living sculptures of guided plant growth, musical instruments producing emotional effects without explicit enchantment) represent some of the most advanced cultural production in Mundu. Smritipal scholars have suggested these practices may genuinely stabilise magical energies in the short term, though the Satyrs themselves show little interest in resolving this theoretical question.
The republic maintains an almost entirely closed border with one important exception: the Exchanger's Guild, colloquially called "Bankers," who serve as cultural intermediaries managing the carefully controlled export of Satyr goods to the Azduar kingdom. The Azduar provide military protection and manage external threats; in exchange, they receive exclusive access to Satyr wine, art, mind-altering substances, and companionship services unavailable anywhere else in Mundu.
Geography & Climate
Bacchusgrove occupies a position in the continent's far west, its location anchoring the Lohadhri Empire's flank. The forest itself is warmer and more humid than surrounding terrain would suggest, as though it maintains a microclimate independent of continental weather patterns. The boundaries of the republic are not fixed — they expand and contract in ways that Satyr officials describe as "responsive to seasonal resonance" and that outside observers describe as "impossible to predict."
The forest floor is covered in flowers that shift colour in response to nearby music and fungi that produce soft luminescence during rainfall. The canopy is dense but not oppressive — dappled light filters through at angles that always seem to favour whatever is growing or happening beneath them. Travellers report a persistent impression that the forest is watching them, not with malice but with the attentive interest of an audience observing a performance.
Settlements
Vinecrown
Capital — Performance Arts & Governance
The capital of Bacchusgrove is given over to performance art and the making of whole places — gardens, halls, and grown groves built so that the audience stands inside the work rather than before it. The Circlewise, the republic's governing council, meets here during the grand seasonal festivals, with decisions made through a combination of debate, artistic demonstration, and communal celebration that outside observers find simultaneously impressive and deeply confusing as a governance model.
Academe Grove
Centre of Learning
Home to philosophical texts and educational methodologies that integrate pleasure with knowledge acquisition. Smritipal scholars who have been granted limited visiting rights describe its libraries as containing the most extensive collection of pre-decline artistic knowledge on the continent, much of it in formats that do not translate well to non-Satyr readers.
Thornroot Hollow
Botanical Specialisation
Source of the legendary "Perception Drafts" — substances that reportedly allow glimpses beyond conventional reality. These are among Bacchusgrove's most valuable exports, their production methods known only to the Thornroot cultivators and never disclosed to outside parties.
The One March
The satyrs have marched to war exactly once. When Dhruva VIII's army came for the mountains, the war-choirs of Bacchusgrove walked out of the forest and stood with the Azduar shield-lines in the high passes, and the Battle of the Singing Passes broke the king's army between stone and song. Then they went home. The alliance made that day has held for five thousand years, living plants grown through dwarf-halls and joint architecture in the mountain cities, and it is the only treaty the Revelmasters have ever signed with anyone.
No war has come to the forest before or since, and the satyrs have never gone out to one again. Ask a Revelmaster why not, and the answer is a party. Ask an Exchanger, somewhere quieter, and the answer is shorter: once was enough to be believed.
Culture & Society
Satyr governance operates through Festival Democracy: major decisions are made during large communal gatherings where artistic merit and communal resonance carry as much weight as logical argument. The Revelmaster presides over these gatherings but holds limited individual authority — influence in Bacchusgrove derives from one's artistic reputation and the quality of experiences one has created for the community. Attempting to seize power through conventional means would be considered not merely wrong but aesthetically offensive.
The only Satyrs permitted to leave Bacchusgrove are members of the Exchanger's Guild. These specially trained individuals undergo rigorous preparation in cross-cultural negotiation and emotional detachment (skills seemingly at odds with typical Satyr temperament) before taking up residence in Azduar settlements. They wear distinctive green cloaks embroidered with complex patterns and maintain small enclaves in major Azduar cities, buildings designed according to specifications from both cultures, always including living plants from Bacchusgrove that create miniature extensions of the fey forest within dwarf territory.
For all other Satyrs, the borders of Bacchusgrove are the borders of their world. This is not experienced as deprivation — the republic's interior is large enough, varied enough, and interesting enough that most residents never feel the absence of what lies outside. Those who do feel that absence tend to find ways to channel it into art.
Flora & Fauna
Chromatic Flowers
Varieties of flower throughout the forest shift colour in response to nearby sound, creating visual accompaniments to music that Satyr artists incorporate deliberately into performances. The mechanism is not understood by outside researchers — access for study has never been granted.
Resonance Fungi
Luminescent fungi that glow in patterns responsive to magical fluctuations. Satyr scholars claim these organisms have been present since before the Catastrophe, predating the Fading entirely, and that their continued vitality represents proof of the forest's unusual magical stability.
Living Sculptures
Satyr horticulturalists have developed techniques for guiding plant growth into complex forms over years and decades, creating sculptures that continue to grow and change. The most famous examples in Vinecrown are centuries old and represent complete artistic narratives expressed through branching patterns.
Forest Guardians
Fey creatures of various types persist in the Gloamwood and the deeper parts of Bacchusgrove, their exact nature deliberately undisclosed by Satyr hosts. What is clear is that they are not hostile to residents and are deeply hostile to uninvited intruders. The Satyrs describe the relationship as "an arrangement of mutual convenience."
Threats & Dangers
Bacchusgrove presents essentially no external threat to any other region, and external threats to Bacchusgrove have consistently failed to materialise as meaningful military engagements. The Lohadhri Empire's protection means that any power considering aggression must first contend with Azduar metallurgical superiority. Beyond this, the forest's own defences are sufficient to render conventional military approaches ineffective — and word of this has spread widely enough that no serious invasion has been attempted in living memory.
For travellers entering the forest itself, the main danger is the forest's defensive responses to uninvited guests, which range from confusing to permanently debilitating depending on the perceived nature of the intrusion. The euphoric disorientation reported by most uninvited visitors is, by all accounts, genuinely pleasant — the problem is that it is followed by unconsciousness and unexplained displacement several miles from where one entered.
At the Table
For the table: a Vinecrown runner carrying the Lohadhri tribute cask has not come home: last seen on the Thornroot Hollow path, where the forest has lately been turning even invited guests around. A scholar at Academe Grove will pay well for escort through the defensive ring on an invitation that, on close inspection, is forged — and the satyr who forged it is still inside. And a woodcutter who woke four miles from where he entered has a stranger's keys in his pocket and no memory of taking them; the Forest Guardians have begun leaving displaced visitors in the same clearing, every time.
